Best movie I watched in 2012…cannot wait for the sequel

A Constant Visual Feast

This all seems awfully familiar: it’s December, and a big-scale fantasy epic based on one of J.R.R. Tolkien’s essential landmark novels has been adapted to the screen by the man who directed Dead Alive. Forget that we’re trekking back to Middle Earth, the arrival of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is itself a return to a status quo that’s over a decade old. If you’re the most casual Lord of the Rings, outraged over the expansion of a single book into three films, or someone who’s just burnt out on the series, the odyssey back to the realm of hobbits, dwarves, and elves may be one you’d like to skip, but for the diehards The Hobbit is a delight, a breezy, airy, charming, magical jaunt through one of cinema’s most iconic fantasy worlds.
